A Parallel Algorithm for Viewshed Computation on Grid Terrains

چکیده
Viewshed (or visibility map) computation is an important component in many GIScience applications and, as nowadays there are huge volume of terrain data available at high resolutions, it is important to develop efficient algorithms to process these data. Since the main improvements on modern processors come from multi-core architectures, parallel programming provides a promising means for developing faster algorithms. In this paper, we describe a new parallel algorithm based on the model proposed by Van Kreveld. Our algorithm uses the shared memory model, which is relatively cheap and supported by most current processors. Experiments have shown that, with 16 parallel cores, it was up to 12 times faster than the serial implementation, and up to 3.9 times using four parallel cores, which is an almost optimal speedup.

An Efficient Algorithm to Compute the Viewshed on DEM Terrains Stored in the External Memory
Nowadays, there is a huge volume of data about terrains available and generally, these data do not fit in the internal memory. So, many GIS applications require efficient algorithms to manipulate the data externally. One of these applications is the viewshed computation that consists in obtain the visible points from a given point p. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm to compute t...
متن کاملIntervisibility on Terrains
Many interesting application problems on terrains involve visibility computations; for example, the search for optimal locations of observation points, line-of-sight communication problems, and the computation of hidden or scenic paths. The solution of such problems needs techniques to answer visibility queries on a terrain eeciently, and/or the development of data structures encoding the visib...
متن کاملThe viewshed problem: a theoretical analysis and a new algorithm for finding the viewshed of a given point on a triangulated terrain
We give a comprehensive theoretical treatment for calculating the viewshed of a given point, present an analytical solution to the viewshed problem and a new algorithm for finding the viewshed on a triangulated terrain. We implement our algorithm on a real terrain. Some algorithms make use of the horizon information of the terrain to calculate viewshed. The vertices of the horizon of the terrai...
متن کاملAdvanced Computer Graphics Project Report Terrain Approximation
DEM datasets are getting larger and larger with increasing precision, so that approximating DEM can be useful in some situations. Conventional terrain simplification algorithms try to minimize the elevation error between the simplified and the original terrains [3]. This project tries to minimize the visibility error in terrain approximation. The error metric is defined as the average viewshed ...
متن کاملA Message-Passing Distributed Memory Parallel Algorithm for a Dual-Code Thin Layer, Parabolized Navier-Stokes Solver
In this study, the results of parallelization of a 3-D dual code (Thin Layer, Parabolized Navier-Stokes solver) for solving supersonic turbulent flow around body and wing-body combinations are presented. As a serial code, TLNS solver is very time consuming and takes a large part of memory due to the iterative and lengthy computations. Also for complicated geometries, an exceeding number of grid...
